Why Classic PvP?
Here at CENTURION, we diverge from conventional wisdom in that we really think that Classic was mechanically the best iteration of PvP throughout WoW's entire rich history. The honor system left much to be desired, there were no arenas and the gear was a mess, but in a very broad sense, the moment-to-moment combat in Classic was the most satisfying. We feel like resilience was a mistake, class homogeneity was a step in the wrong direction, and near limitless mana pools was a disaster for interesting fights to occur. Subtle changes such as removal of the deadzone for hunters, warriors, and rogues signaled a desire to make the game feel "easier" in a bad way. An arms race of mobility that started from the first expansion onward made the game feel more like a flowchart than a visceral fighting experience, and the movement away from rock-paper-scissors class balance just generally made the game feel more boring. What we love about Classic on this team is that sometimes you feel completely helpless and sometimes you feel like a king. Sometimes, as a hunter, I get frost nova'd in a particular position with a mage frostbolting in my deadzone and I literally do not have an answer, but sometimes I order my pet to attack a rogue 100 yards away and I have all but won the encounter already.
We can boil it down to 3 core values:
* Classic PvP is hard.
* Classic PvP is, in a very surface-level way, "unfair", but for everyone.
* Classic PvP is fast.
What is LEGIONNAIRE?
Legionnaire is a Classic PvP sandbox. We aren't doing balance changes or new ideas. The general thought is: if you want to play Classic PvP as it existed back in 2006 with added arenas, some much needed QoL stuff, and an updated client, this is the realm for you.
What is LEGIONNAIRE PLUS?
Legionnaire+ is Classic+ PvP. We want to keep the general core values we established above, but smooth out some of the rough edges, borrowing little ideas here and there from later expansions that we think fit in within our PvP philosophy, making some of the underperforming specs a little (not a lot!) more powerful, and making gear "make sense" across the board. What this means is: new talents, new spells, new gear, and rebalanced racials catered to the sweaty PvP crowd. It is our custom "twist" on our starting point of Legionnaire. Now what sort of changes "fit" inside our stated PvP philosophy? Well, a lot of that is subjective, so this will very much be an experiment. Some changes will 100% upset or not make sense to some people and will more naturally make sense to others. But we think that, even if it seems difficult or nebulous, we should at least try! A wise man once said: a good game is one that has positive "net fun". So we'll be keeping ideas about counterplay very much in mind as we design new features
LEGIONNAIRE PLUS: What are you balancing around, specifically?
This is a kind of interesting question. "PvP" is a big umbrella. Do we mean every class and spec can win a dueling tournament? Do we mean every class can be on a top 5 arena team? 2v2? 3v3? 5v5? Here on the CENTURION team, we consider the CTF mode of WoW to be the most interesting and the most balanced. If you watch tournaments of Classic WSG, the top teams have one of every class available to them with 2 flex spots. If this isn't indicative of a broad, elegant balance, we're not sure what would be. That being said, we do want arenas to be a dimension of gameplay people care about, talk about, and enjoy experiencing. If I could sum it up in a ratio, I'd say that ~75% of our efforts will go to making Warsong Gulch fun and balanced, and 25% will go to arenas. We have some ideas about how to divorce certain facets of gameplay that both of them share so that we can more easily balance them each independently. We're having those discussions now. In terms of -which- arenas we care about, we probably care about 3v3 the most. 5v5 is so chaotic that we believe you can find a niche there no matter what, and 2v2 is, by virtue of it's small size, way too meta-gamey to devote a lot of time obsessing over.
Consumables?
A lot of this will be subjective, but we feel like the spammy no-limit consumables ruined battlegrounds in Classic; free action potions being the worst and most easily spotted offender. However, we realize that managing consumables could be a very interesting mechanic of group vs group PvP. You can choose a single consumable (with limited charges depending on the item) at the PvP consumable vendor. Now, when you see a free action potion popped in Warsong, you can rest assured that they exist in limited quantity, and the player who gulped it down burned an actual limited resource.
Cross faction?
Yes, both realms are considered "factionless". This solves a myriad of issues both in class/race design and in technicalities involving small server populations/matchmaking/queue times. If you go outside of specially designated sanctuaries, you are considered in a FFA PvP zone. Some exciting new ideas for group-based/group-enforced world PvP are being talked about and worked on but are not implemented as of right now. In the context of battlegrounds: after team balancing is taken into account, the thing that determines if you fight for blue team or red team is a coin flip.
LEGIONNAIRE PLUS: Tauren Rogues?
Yes.
